The Great Pumpkin Count

by Debi Huang

At 4 ½, The Little Explorer is fascinated with counting. So instead of our usual Halloween nature scavenger hunt, I thought it might be fun to see how many pumpkins we could spot on a walk around the neighborhood. We called our game “The Great Pumpkin Count.”

The one rule we made for our little game was that we would only count the real pumpkins, not plastic, ceramic or other non-natural ones.

In case you’re wondering, we found 71. But of course that wasn’t really the point now was it?

There was the excitement of approaching each porch to see if it had a pumpkin. If so, how big would it be? Would we find more than one? Maybe even a jack-o’-lantern? Which did we like the best?

If you’re at all familiar with The Little Explorer (my wild child), it’s not hard to imagine that our great pumpkin count turned into more of a run than a walk. (I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone so excited to see a pumpkin.) We had a blast.

We also familiarized ourselves with the houses we’ll be checking out on Halloween night – in costume, of course.

Don’t worry if you don’t get to this one today. I’m sure the pumpkins will be around for a few more days.

Yes, I suppose that's one advantage of urban living! 🙂

My younger one is big on counting, too. Not sure we could find 71 in a reasonable amount of time 😉
