What Outdoor Activity Are You Hesitant to Let Your Kids Try?

by Debi Huang

Welcome to the first edition of “Readers Weigh In,” where I pose a question on the Go Explore Nature Facebook page and you respond. Then I feature as many answers as possible with everyone here (along with a link to your wonderfully amazing blog if you have one).

Big thanks to Melissa of Momcomm for the inspiration behind this idea. I’m looking forward to hearing back from you on a variety of topics and then sharing your thoughts, challenges, ideas and successes with everyone here.

The question I posed this week:
What Outdoor Activity Are You Hesitant to Let Your Kids Try?

Me first! Me first! I’m going to have to go with surfing. I’m not a strong swimmer and swift water/ocean water freaks me out. But here’s a reality check: The Little Explorer has eyes for all things water. I’m going to have to get over it. And prepare him to be safe.

Okay. Here’s what some of you had to say.

Melynda from TravelingMel:

We won’t be doing rodeo, football or motorcycle riding (I hope) … maybe those aren’t the outdoor activities you are thinking of … I think anything else is a go with the proper safety training.

Ruth from So Cal Pocket Memories:

Climbing rocks because I get really nervous.

Pablo from Family Wilds:

We’re not really hesitant about anything as long as all three of us are well prepared and confident that we can do it safely.

Nicole from Arrows Sent Forth:

I’m always a little hesitant of water-related activities because our son really isn’t very brave when it comes to water. He likes to swim if the water is warm, and that’s about it. So I always fear that anything involving water is going to include lots of screaming and crying.

Melissa from Momcomm & Adventuroo:

I’m hesitant to let my kids go rock climbing. Little Roo is too young but Big Roo could probably do it. I think we need to try an indoor gym first and then go with experienced friends as it’s been a while for us!

Many thanks to these awesome peeps for jumping in and joining the fun this first time around.

Now it’s your turn – What outdoor activity are you hesitant to let your kids try?

If you want to get in on future conversations, be sure to like the Go Explore Nature Facebook page.

It's always nice to share.
