The hubby and I have yet to take the explorers camping. I’m hoping this is the summer it’ll happen, but I still have my doubts.
So who do I turn to when I need some advice and ideas for ensuring a successful first kids’ camping experience? Fellow blogger Roy Scribner. He encourages parents to experience the great outdoors with their children at CampingBlogger.net
Maybe you have memories of camping trips with your own parents – the family camping vacation was quite a rich tradition for many of us in our youth. But even if camping wasn’t a part of your childhood, there are a lot of good reasons to make it a part of your own kids’ upbringing.
Working parents, school sports, television and video games – there are a lot of distractions that come between parents and kids these days. While we cannot change some of the economic realities of our modern lives, we can teach our children that there is value in simplicity. A family camping trip is a great way to instill these values in our children and show them that fun doesn’t have to include a video screen.
Some of our friends who we have coaxed into camping have been a bit nervous about spending an unplugged weekend with their kids. I have to admit, the inside of our tent looked like a small toy store on some of our early camping trips! We quickly discovered, though, that once our kids were outdoors, the toys weren’t nearly as interesting as a stick or skipping rocks on the water, or even a giant banana slug. Nowadays, our 4-year-old is the only one who brings a few toys – and those tend to see little use.
I went camping with my family as a child, and my husband & I would go once or twice a summer, up until my son was born. We were hoping to take him last year, but it didn't' work out. I'm so eager to take him camping for the first time this year!
Debi, You might want to check out this post about camping with kids. There are some great things in the comments too!
Looking forward to hearing about your adventure!

http://www.heywoodsmeadow.com/blog/camping-with-kids.html
I never went camping as a kid, and as an adult only twice. We took our son, 4, on his first camping trip to Yosemite a few weeks ago. Wonderful time! (except that he would not allow us to have someone take a family shot from Tunnel View)

Photos:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/7230309@N05/sets/72157624244881666/
Kids can have fun with anything, and lets face it, nature provides a ton of things for them to get creative with.

Melissa, definitely start in the backyard. Its a safe way to test it out. On our first backyard trip, my oldest made it through the night, while the youngest went back inside with mom. I did later find out that he wanted to come back out, but it was too late at night. He&#
Debi- I can't wait to hear about your trip if you decide to go!
I'd LOVE to go but taking a baby seems like such a hassle. I DO wanna camp in the backyard this summer though… it's on my bucket list!

Good post Roy!
Take lots of pictures, Mel 🙂 I wish I had pictures of camping, from my childhood – I am going to bug the folks in a few weeks, to see if there are any that I don't know about.
Some of my fondest moments are from camping as a kid.

We have one camping trip under our belt this summer and another week-long trip at the end of the month. It's not always easy with little ones, but it is (almost) always worth it.
