We’ve had our fair share of windy days recently in Los Angeles. And although it has kicked up the allergies and summoned cooler days, it also got me thinking about a great way for kids to enjoy the outdoors on a windy day: fly a kite.
One of the wonderful things about living in Southern California is that you can enjoy a cool, breezy day on the beach in fall and winter, which is when we last took our oldest son kite flying.
But if you don’t live near a beach, don’t worry! Any wide open space will do. Just look for a spot without any trees, poles, power lines or other potential hazards for your child or deterrents for the kite.
The last time we went kite flying, we picked a spot along the shore that wasn’t too crowded. And with just a little help from dad, my 4 year old was off and running like there was no tomorrow. The breeze was perfect — not too windy and not too calm. His kite danced and soared for what felt like forever.
And my son was beside himself with joy.
He took hold of the kite handle and held on with all his might. He went running down the beach without abandon.
Every once in a while he would stop and stare up at the kite and watch the wind work its magic. Then he’d be off and running again, without a care in the world except that his kite follow.
Kids are naturals at allowing the wind to guide them where it may.
How about you? Do you let your kids go exploring on windy days? If not, you should! The next time it gets windy outside, don’t fight it — embrace it. Put on a jacket, take your little ones outside and enjoy!

My best memory of kite flying is from a trip to Norway. Our little kite flew so high it was just a speck in the sky. Thanks for the memory.

Heck, I don't have kids and I still fly a kite. In fact, I keep it in my car at all times.

Kites are great, aren't they? I was so excited to let my son loose with the kite for his first time this year.
