I hope you’re not afraid of a little dirt. (And if you are, it’s time to get over it!) Consider Day 3 of our 31 Days of Backyard Nature Fun an opportunity to let go of worries about clean clothes, hands and faces. Focus instead on one of the most basic rights of childhood: Playing in dirt.
Day 3: Dig in the dirt.
Today’s challenge might just be tougher on you than the kids. Your goal? To set your explorers free to dig in the dirt. That’s right – order them to head outside and get dirty!
Buckets, shovels and a few favorite indoor toys can help provide some initial inspiration. You can also add some natural elements to the mix, like sticks and rocks.
But don’t worry too much about what your kids will do when you let them loose to dig in the dirt; they’ll figure it out. Trust me.
The Explorers dig for worms and roly-poly bugs, make tracks with cars and trucks, bury and “discover” rocks, and much more.
Don’t have any dirt? How about snow? Or sand? Both make great substitutes.
Just joining us? Catch up on what we’re up to at 31 Days of Backyard Nature Fun.

LOL – you'll have to let me know how it works out. 🙂

How funny–just as I was about to say that our dirt is covered by a foot of snow right now, you suggested to use snow instead! I will say that it is a whole lot cleaner (but colder)!
