Get Outside Giveaway for Bird Watching Fun

by Debi Huang

Each week this month – which is Let’s G.O. (Get Outside) Month – I’ve hosted a “Get Outside” giveaway featuring one of our favorite things. This is the final giveaway, so enjoy!

This Week’s Item: Lucky Bums Small Kids Binoculars

Why We Love It
As you probably know if you’ve been a regular reader of this blog, I love to watch wildlife – in my own backyard and beyond. The most frequent visitors to our space by far are birds. Naturally, we’ve become bird watchers.

One essential tool for watching backyard wildlife such as birds is a good, kid-friendly pair of binoculars.

Big thanks to Mike over at TrailMix.net for sharing his thoughts on how to choose binoculars for kids. I took his advice and bought the Lucky Bums Small Kids Binoculars and have not been disappointed. Here’s why:

  • Functionality: They’re designed to fit a child’s face, are lightweight and are easy to use.
  • Toughness: They’re rubber armored, water resistant and can hold an image sharp and steady.
  • Kid Coolness Factor: They come with a nifty carrying case, strap and lens cleaner – just like for adults!

To Enter
Leave a comment telling me about your child’s favorite backyard birds. Please leave your email address, twitter name or blog site so I have a way to reach you!

The Nitty-Gritty

  • This giveaway will run through midnight PST on Saturday, April 30, 2011.
  • Sorry, but this giveaway is open to U.S. residents only.
  • The winner will be chosen using the nifty random number generator at random.org.
  • Winner will have 24 hours to reply to my notification; if I don’t hear back after that, I’ll pick another winner.

Good luck!

Note: The item I’ve chosen for this giveaway was not donated or given to me in exchange for this review. I’ve selected it because we love watching our backyard wildlife (like birds) and want you to try it, too! You can read my disclosure policy for more information.

It's always nice to share.

These look great! My 6 year old son has Down syndrome-and like most people with DS he has an extra gentle affinity for living things and nature. He is just now really getting into bird watching and thinks it is the neatest thing ever! We have recently had a bluebird pair take up house in our backyard and he is just amazed! 🙂

The kids love chickadees the best since they come to our window feeder. We can't hang regular feeders because of bears but are able to hang one from our second story window that attracts them in the winter months.
lyndacostello@gmail.com

Thanks for linking to our binocular guide! One more tip that's not in the guide – it's important to teach kids not to point the binoculars directly at the sun. For some kids all you have to say is don't point the binoculars at the sun. Three to five year old boys are generally the exception because often the first thing they do is try to point the binoculars at the sun so we just

Bridget (3) and Timothy (19 months) are fascinated by the Robins in our yard this spring! They love to listen to bird calls in their book with recordings and then recognize the "chicka-dee-dee-dee" outside! marthaw@hughes.net

My girls love anything with feathers! Aside from our chickens that they like to chase around, they love to watch the robins and wrens that come around!

alklong at hotmail dot com

My boys like the hummingbirds the best, but we also like to assign the other birds in our yard personalities. We have determined that the crows are very bossy, so it cracks the boys up when a little bird chases one away. Thanks for your inspiration!
- Karin (karners@sbcglobal.net)

My daughter's present for her fifth birthday iwas a whole peanut feeder for the blue jays. We love that herald their arrival to the yard each day with song. We run from all corners of the house to the kitchen window when we hear it to watch them snack at the feeder.

Cardinals have been my daughter's obsession since she learned it's our state bird. The males are easy for her to spot, but she is learning to recognize females from seeing them interact with the males

Catherine.schrader@yahoo.com

Oh my gosh those look great! What fun. Sam loves so many birds and is starting to know them by name. Right now she knows chickadees, morning doves, cardinals, robins, crows, and grackels. We are working on the gold finch, junco and woodpeckers as well. So many species around here! But just watching her and Avery watch the birds in the backyard from our couch is awesome. Both girls have little

My 6 year old son loves watching the birds. His favorite is the male cardinal which is in our yard daily. He also loves the robin who decided to build a nest where we can watch from our patio! But it is funny when I hear him tell his friends about the cowbird that we saw on our feeder! His friends are amazed!
Kathleen in PA

My daughter loves the Male and Female Cardinal that we often see together visiting our suet feeder. She also loves the Mockingbird. Actually I think she loves them all!!! Every time a new bird comes she's looking it up in the Audubon Guide and drawing it in her Nature Journal:) I really love that she enjoys them as much as me!!!
~April in SC~

My son enjoys the chickadees, but we're happy to have seen juncos, two different chickadees, chestnuts, and sparrows at our feeder.

Would love a pair of binoculars for my son. He has the little ones that came with a subscription to Your Big Backyard, but real binoculars would be a great gift for him.

Since we moved here in November, we have enjoyed all of the hummingbirds that come to our backyard. I don't know who likes them most, me or my 4 year old! 🙂
