Fun Friday activities are quick-and-simple ways to explore nature in your own backyard.
One wonderful side effect of this blog (and there have been many) is that we’re dipping our feet into the world of gardening. Last year we planted our first veggies (with little success, but we’ll be at it again this year, I promise). This year, we’re expanding our garden space to include wildflowers.
We’re hoping that by planting native wildflowers, we’ll attract more wildlife to our backyard. More butterflies. More birds. More happy explorers.
If you’ve never planted wildflowers before, don’t worry.
All you need are some seeds (ask a friend or your local nursery to learn what’s native to your area), some soil and some kids.
You don’t even need much room. In fact, we opted to plant in recycled containers leftover from last year just for fun.
The kids loved mixing up the new soil with the old.
They also loved placing the seeds and watering. The big explorer also helped me label each of the containers so we’d know what was what once things started growing.
I’m hoping in a few weeks, we’ll have something to smile about.
Take-Home Tips
- Let the kids in on the planning. Kids are much more invested when they’re part of the process. I let the big explorer choose which seeds we’d plant in which containers.
- Don’t mind the dirt. I was shocked how dirty we all were by the time our wildflower seeds were planted. All part of the fun!
