A Sweet Take on Strawberry Picking

by Debi Huang

For Mother’s Day this year, I didn’t long for a day at the spa or even breakfast in bed. No, I wanted to go strawberry picking with my kids. (I suppose if you’ve been reading my blog for a while, that comes as no surprise!)

But instead of a post about our wonderful morning picking berries, I thought it might be fun to let my big explorer – now 5 ½ years old – do the talking.

What did you like best about picking strawberries?
I liked to touch the strawberries and then I liked to eat them. I also liked to put them from my bucket into the box you were holding.

How do you like to pick strawberries?
Take them off slowly. Don’t tug them. Pick the ones that are dark red all around. Pick however many you want. You can stop picking when you get tired.

Was there anything you didn’t like about picking berries?
I didn’t like having to wait while they weighed all the strawberries we picked. It took too long.

What do you like to do with the strawberries you pick?
Eat them! I really liked the strawberry shortcake we made.

How did the strawberries taste?
Awesome! It’s true … they’re really good!

What other types of fruits and vegetables do you like to pick?
Carrots, broccoli, lemons (from our lemon tree) and lettuce. I was going to say apples, but we haven’t picked those before.

Do you think you’ll want to go pick strawberries again?
Yes, because it’s fun!

So there you have it! Sounds like we’ll be heading to the farm again soon, which is fine by me!

Oh, and just in case you’re wondering, the little explorer seemed to have just as much fun as big brother.

How about you – have you made it out to a local farm to pick fruits or vegetables yet this season? Or do you have a garden at home where your little ones like to pick?

It's always nice to share.

Yes, we try to go either apple picking or strawberry picking (or both) every year. I love strawberry picking, and then buying a slice of strawberry pie while I'm there. The thing is trying to figure out what to do with all the berries afterwards. 🙂

That interview is so stinkin' cute. I may have to steal that idea for a future post!

I'm hoping to take Big Roo strawberry picking this year. Last year we went but he just wanted to watch the cows nearby. And run across the rows of strawberries. I'm hoping this year he'll enjoy it more!

    Oh, fun Mother's Day!
We do lots of wild pickin' in the summer but have not gone to a farm yet… I am going to be on the look out for opportunities this summer! Fun stuff!
Love your little guys take on things!

I love this! I love that this post is from your son's perspective! Strawberry picking is so much fun…and eating the strawberries afterwards is just as wonderful. I'm hoping to go strawberry picking w/ my little guy this spring.

Here's hoping you'll all be out there picking berries soon! They most definitely taste better when you pick 'em yourself! And, yes, Mel, I think you'll be seeing more of my big explorer's take on things around here …

Cute! You shoould get him to be a regular poster!
The closest we can get to strawberries are the California berries at the store. We'll pick raspberries late summer, though. Sounds like a lovely mother's day.

How fun! We live near quite a few orchards around here, so it's only a matter of time until we take the kids to do this.

Oh we have wonderful memories and photos from our strawberry picking days. Unfortunately our local strawberry farm closed down to the public because too many people werent paying for the amount of strawberries they ate whilst out picking. Such a shame!
