The Big Explorer is lucky enough to attend a public school that still believes in the power of play. Even if it’s for less than an hour a day, I’m happy that he gets to spend at least part of his time at school playing outside.
His top two current favorite recess break activities? Searching for leaf bugs (a.k.a. plant hoppers) and playing kickball. My kinda kid.
The folks at KEEN think recess breaks are important, too – and not just for kids. In fact, they’re challenging everyone around the world to take 10 minutes to get outside and play. They’re even offering a chance to win a pair of KEENs to anyone who’s willing to share photos of their fun.
WHAT: Worldwide Recess Day
WHEN: 10 minutes any time on Friday, September 14
WHO: Everyone around the world
WHERE: Wherever you might be – at home, at work or while you’re on the go
RSVP: Snap a photo of your recess break & upload it to Twitter or Instagram (use the hashtag #TAKE10) for a chance to win a pair of KEENs! (Winners will be announced every hour until midnight.)
Need some ideas for what to do? Here are some of our favorite ways to get outside and connect with nature when we’re short on time:
- Take a walk (or ride) around the block
- Rock a hula hoop
- Do some cloud watching
- Blow bubbles
- Play catch, Frisbee, soccer or kickball
- Hunt for bugs
- Water the garden
- Read under a favorite tree
- Go bird watching
- Play with shadows
- Enjoy a picnic
- Go for a barefoot walk (preferably in wet grass)
Note: I was not compensated in any way by KEEN to promote this event. I just thought it was too cool not to share. Read my full disclosure policy for more information.
O.K., you’ve officially been invited. How will you join the fun?
