Picture Perfect: Aloha from Oahu!

by Debi Huang

Big surprise – we’re having a wonderful time here in Hawaii! It’s just me and the five year old until my hubby and the little one fly in tomorrow, but we’re holding up pretty well on our own. (Staying with a good friend and her family helps, too.)

The weather in Honolulu is incredibly windy, so we haven’t braved the beach yet. And our grand plans today to hike to Diamond Head were thwarted by crowds. That’s right, we were actually turned away at the gate for lack of space in the parking lot!

No worries! We headed to Makapu’u Point Lighthouse Trail instead. The wind became part of the spirit of our adventure. I think it made for great photos like this one at the trail head:

and this one at the lookout point:

Along the way, there were all kinds of cool things to discover, like lava rocks, cactus galore, kiawe wood trees that creaked when the wind blew, myna birds and this red-crested cardinal:

The lighthouse was a beautiful sight to see at the end of the trail, along with stunning ocean views.

We ended the adventure the way any good Hawaiian hike should end – with a picnic lunch and a cup of shave ice.

There’s plenty more fun on the horizon, so stay tuned for another update this weekend. I hope you are all having a wonderful week exploring the outdoors, too! Aloha!

It's always nice to share.

Justin, hope you have something fun planned for your son's spring break. Hawaii has been awesome!

Mel, can't believe you'd brave (and love) snow but not wind! Everything here in Hawaii comes & goes, so it's not nearly as fierce as it might be in your neck of the woods.

Glad you are embracing the wind. I have to admit it is the one element that can keep me inside.

Looks like a great trip!

Hey everyone! Thanks for stopping by. We are having a wonderful time – in spite of the fact that there are severe wind advisories in place & we may not make it to the beach at all! But it's fun to improvise plans, too. It means we'll probably visit places we might have missed otherwise.

I'm so jealous! We went to Maui in October and I wanted to go back the minute we left! Love the picture of you and your son. Definitely looks like you're having a wonderful time.
