Fun Friday activities are quick-and-simple ways to explore nature in your own backyard.
There has been much brewing of magic soup around these parts lately. Amidst some rainy, cold, blustery days, the explorers managed not to mind the weather one bit – as long as they were busy creating their secret concoction outside in our backyard.
It all started with the big explorer spotting a favorite bin (which you might remember from its hay day as our backyard beach last summer). It was full of an icky sand-water combination and seemed an unlikely lure on such a cold day.
But the big explorer had an idea up his little 6-year-old sleeve. He asked the little explorer if he wanted to make magic soup. Of course, the little guy was in.
Since the base of the broth was already prepared, the kids looked to nature for further ingredients. A lemon here, some rocks there. A few leaves and flower petals were added, too. Believe it or not, their creation actually smelled lovely.
There was much stirring, too, of course. Thank God there were plenty of sticks to go around.
Before long, the sight of the water was too tempting for the little explorer and he had to touch it; get in it up to his elbows and more. Much splashing and drenching ensued. Pretty soon favorite cars and trucks were in on the action, too.
Over the course of several days, the kids came back to their magic soup often, stirring and adding new ingredients to ensure it stayed ready for whoever might need it.
Take-Home Tips
- Let the kids take the lead. This activity was all about the imaginations of a 6-year-old and a 2 ½-year-old. No adult involvement required.
- Don’t sweat the small stuff. I was initially concerned that the kids were getting soaked on a cold, windy day. But sometimes, kids know best.
More Ideas for Winter Outdoor Fun
- Play nature bingo.
- Ride on the swings at your neighborhood park.
- Go on a winter nature scavenger hunt.

And if you live in the Los Angeles area, come join our family nature club as we go bird watching at Malibu Lagoon State Beach. The littlest explorers are also welcome, but may prefer exploring the shore and going on a bird scavenger hunt (which I’m providing). Sun., Feb. 27 at 10 a.m.
Happy exploring!

Debi, this reminds me of a beautiful children’s story book called “Wombat Stew” written by Marcia K. Vaughan. It’s a delightful story about Australian animals. Donna 🙂 🙂

@Mara: That is too funny – if only there really were a toddler sangria! 🙂

This makes me think of the time we spent in Pasadena when Tommy used to gather wild strawberries and lemons and put them in his wading pool. I used to joke that it was like a giant vat of toddler sangria!
