Celebrate Earth Day Outside

Does that headline seem like a no-brainer to you? I hope so. Sure, there are plenty of books you could read, crafts you could make or discussions you could have with your kids about what Earth Day (April 22) is all about.

But like I said in my post earlier this week on how to raise kids who care about the planet, the most important thing you can do is to get outside.

I still don’t know precisely what we’ll be up to come Friday, but I’ve got a few ideas. Maybe we’ll:

  • Visit a new-to-us neighborhood park.
  • Take a litter clean-up walk around our neighborhood.
  • Go for a bike ride.
  • Spend time in the big explorer’s school garden.
  • Have a picnic in the backyard (or maybe a backyard campfire).

If you’re looking for a little more inspiration, here are some ideas from around the web:

  • 5 Ways to Unplug and Connect With Your Family for Earth Day from the National Wildlife Federation
  • 10 Ways to Celebrate the Earth With Children from Backyard Mama
  • 10 Ways to Give Back That Involve Nature and the Great Outdoors from Mom it Forward
  • Earth Day Tips for your garden from Wildlife Garden
  • Get Earthy With Three Fun Dirt Activities from the National Wildlife Federation

Of course, you know I have a ton of backyard fun ideas, too, Here are a few that seem timely:

  • Go on a spring nature scavenger hunt
  • Make a pinecone birdfeeder
  • Plant a tree from seed
  • Take a nighttime neighborhood walk
  • Build a fairy house
  • Plant wildflowers
  • Do some backyard bird watching

Whatever you decide to do this Earth Day, make time to GET OUTSIDE!

Do you have ideas for celebrating Earth Day with kids? I’d love to hear ’em! Please share in the comments below.

It's always nice to share.
