Fun Friday activities are quick-and-simple ways to explore nature in your own backyard.
Am I the only feeling like summer is all about crafting? We’ve been craft crazy these past few weeks! One of the biggest hits so far has been our rock necklaces. (In fact, we received tons of compliments on our creations when we were in Yosemite!)
Inspired by this idea I spotted in a recent issue of FamilyFun magazine, I picked up a few supplies before we headed to Yosemite. You’ll need:
- Rocks
- Colored wire (we used 22-gauge, but the stronger, the better)
- Needle-nose pliers
- Leather cord
To get started, we headed out on a rock hunt. Once we got back, the explorers spent some time choosing just the right rock for their pendants, then washed them with great care.
Each of the kids then chose their own combination of colored wire and leather cord. This part is really fun for the kids, so offer up a few colors and types of cords to choose from.
The rest of the crafting is best left to the grown ups. The instructions call for wrapping about 15 inches of wire around the rock a few times to secure it. Then you’ll need to twist the ends and create a loop, which you can close with the pliers. Cut off any excess wire and add the pendant to a length of leather cord.
We made these gems on our first afternoon in Yosemite and proudly sported them the entire trip.
Take-Home Tips
- Let grownups secure the wire. I’m thankful we had a crafty dad on hand to take over this part of the craft!
- Have fun with the options. Not only is each rock unique, but so is the combination of rock, colored wire and leather cord. These creations are truly one of a kind.

I admit, it took some advanced planning to make this happen. But it was SO worth it. Next time! 🙂

That's a great idea. we do lots of crafts at home, but when we are on vacation I usually default to bringing paper and colored pencils. Maybe I'll gather some supplies for our big camping trip (which we are leaving on tomorrow and I have no time to get supplies…)
