Things get pretty exciting around here when the latest issues of the Ranger Rick magazines land in our mailbox.
So excited that the October issues have arrived |
In case you aren’t already familiar with these award-winning publications, let me introduce you.
The National Wildlife Federation publishes three magazines just for kids – Wild Animal Baby, Your Big Backyard and Ranger Rick. All three are designed to teach kids about wildlife.
While we all enjoyed Wild Animal Baby – which is for the 2- to 4-year-old crowd – we’re focused these days on the other two magazines. Good to know about both:
- No advertising!
- High-quality photography
- Fun characters & exciting adventures
- Plenty of ideas for getting outside & connected to nature
- 10 issues per year for $19.95 (with all profits supporting the NWF)
We read every issue from cover to cover several times after they arrive. Sometimes we even get inspired to try one of the many activities described (like the time we played I Spy Crows). Plus, you can access even more ideas and inspiration with each issue online.
But enough about what I think. Here’s what The Explorers had to say about why they love these magazines so much.
Your Big Backyard: Ages 4 to 7
The Little Explorer says … my two favorite things about the magazine are the little books you get to cut out and staple together and “The Adventures of Bonnie and Chester [a story that combines words with images so kids can read along].”
I also like the coloring pictures [the art that readers send in], the page with the pictures and words (see above – yes, he’s a big fan!) and Ricky Raccoon.
Ranger Rick: Ages 7 to 14
The Big Explorer says … my two favorite sections of the magazine are “Reader Riddles” and “Ranger Rick Adventures” (aka: the comic). I like them because the comics are cool and the riddles are funny.
I like the magazine because it has a main section that tells about one type of animal and I get to learn about that animal. I’ve learned about animal dads, how fish schools work and raising chipmunks.
I think other kids might like the magazine because it has cool games and lots of information.
Note: We’ve been long-time subscribers to the Ranger Rick magazines at our own expense. I was not compensated in any way to share my opinions about them with you here. Read my full disclosure policy for more information.

Oh my gosh! I used to LOVE My Big Backyard as a kid! I’m so glad they’re still in publication- hopefully they still will be when I have kids of my own in a few years! Bonnie and Chester were definitely my favorite bit 🙂
