Stocking Stuffer Idea for Outdoor Kids: Safety Reflectors

by Debi Huang

A couple of weeks ago, I featured some gift ideas for backyard nature fun. Today I’m excited to share one more – with a giveaway to boot!

My dear friend Kari Svenneby of ActiveKidsClub.com is a true outdoor advocate and a huge proponent of getting kids outside no matter what the weather. This year she launched her own line of safety reflectors designed with outdoor kids in mind.

Why bother with safety reflectors? If you’ve got kids who walk and bike a lot, you know they’re hard for drivers to see. Add to that the change in seasons and more time spent walking and biking in darkness and rainy weather and you get my point.

The good news is that you can prevent accidents from happening this time of year by wearing a safety reflector.

Kari shared some useful data about the impact of using reflectors:

  • If you use a safety reflector, you are reducing your risk of being hit by a car by 85%.
  • Without a reflector, it takes a driver 25 to 30 meters to see you (that’s 82 to 98 feet for us American folk); with a reflector you can be seen up to 140 meters away (a whopping 459 feet!).
  • If you convert this to seconds, wearing a safety reflector can give a driver 10 seconds to react instead of 2 seconds without one.

The bottom line: Buying a safety reflector is a cheap investment that can go a long way when you and your explorers are out walking and biking in the winter and beyond.

Active Kids Club Safety Reflectors
Kari created her own line of safety reflectors because she wanted them for her family and could not find any stylish reflectors in Canada. ActiveKidsclub.com safety reflectors are distributed to stores in Canada and sold online.

We purchased several reflectors earlier this year and now have one attached to each of our backpacks, plus one on my keychain! They’re cute, kid-friendly and inexpensive. (They retail for just $4 each!)

Just in time for the holiday season, Kari has been gracious enough to offer one lucky reader a free family pack of safety reflectors (a total value of $24). The pack includes 10 safety reflectors in the following designs (plus 2 reflective stickers!):

  • 2 Hearts
  • 3 Butterflies
  • 3 Soccer balls
  • 1 Purple Active Kid Reflector
  • 1 yellow Active Kid Reflector

To enter, leave a comment sharing one way you plan to spend time outside with your family this winter.

  • This giveaway will run through midnight PST on Sun., Dec. 2, 2012.
  • You must include an email address with your comment. Entries without an email address will not be included.
  • This giveaway is open to U.S. & Canadian residents only.
  • The winners will be chosen using the nifty random number generator at random.org.
  • Winners will have 24 hours to reply to my notification. If I don’t hear back after that, I’ll pick another winner.

Note: We purchased several ActiveKidsClub.com safety reflectors earlier this year at our own expense. Kari’s offer of a holiday giveaway seemed like the perfect time to share our experience with you here. You can read my disclosure policy for more information.

It's always nice to share.

Great idea! My son loves puddle stomping and for us, winter = rain. It would be nice to do this safely in the dark, too!
mamammalia@gmail.com

Skiing, skiing, skiing, skiing. Man, now I just need it to snow. In the meantime we're doing lots of tree climbing and bike riding since those are much harder to do on ice. Great product Kari!

I love these and they go perfectly next to a whistle on the outside of a pack! I plan on exploring with my grandkids Monterey Bay and the surrounding area in California this winter. We are excited that they have just moved to such a beautiful place.

Love these! We have encountered so many people lately who are out in the dark and you can't see them. These are a great way to keep our kids safe.

Winter…if it ever really snows we will be snowshoeing, snowboarding, and skiing. We are still waiting.

Thanks for the review and info Debi!

These reflectors are a great idea! We'll be spending a lot of family time outside this winter – skiing, hiking and geocaching. We're even thinking of introducing our 7 year-old to snowshoeing! Snow and cold never slows us down – in fact, it just opens up more opportunities to get outside.
gaylelabuzer@gmail.com
