Welcome to Day 12 of 31 Days of Backyard Nature Fun, a month-long series offering simple ways to get outside exploring the natural world. To catch up on what we’ve been up to, you might want to head here.
How much do you think you could discover about nature in just one square foot of space? You might be surprised.
Turns out you don’t necessarily need a lot of green space to explore the wonders of nature. Check out how much life there is on just the stems of a few plants in our neighbor’s front garden.
Day 12: Go on a micro safari.
A micro safari is what I call it when you explore the plants and critters that inhabit a very small area.
Simply head outside and choose one square foot of space to study up close. You can choose anything from a patch of grass, dirt or snow, to a bunch of flowers or the trunk of a tree. Bring along a magnifying glass to help you see things up close.
Spend several moments taking a very close look at everything within your defined area. Then discuss what you see. Younger kids might enjoy naming colors or counting objects; older kids may want to snap some photos for identifying what you see later.
Just joining us? Catch up on what we’re up to at 31 Days of Backyard Nature Fun.
