Welcome to Day 28 of 31 Days of Backyard Nature Fun, a month-long series offering simple ways to get outside exploring the natural world. To see activities from earlier this month, head here.
I have been remiss this month in sharing winter gardening activities for kids. I suppose that’s because (like most of you) our garden is sorta non-existent at the moment. Which means that any garden-related activities we might be up to are happening inside instead of out.
Except for this one, which is perfect for winter because it requires you to start dreaming of the possibilities for this year’s garden.
And if the pavement near you is currently covered in snow, create your own painted snow garden instead!
Day 28: Design your own chalk garden.
Gather up some brightly colored chalk and head outside. We used our driveway as a canvas, but a walkway or sidewalk works just as well.
My only instructions to The Explorers: To design their own garden. I asked them to think about what would be in their gardens – including plants, animals and anything else they might want. Then I sat back and watched what they dreamed up.
I love how the finished chalk garden turned out (see photo above). It features a palm tree (just out of view), a small box of strawberries, a hummingbird, a butterfly, a flower and a bee.
What would your child dream up for his/her very own chalk garden?
Just joining us? Catch up on what we’re up to at 31 Days of Backyard Nature Fun.

My mantra is "keep it simple, keep it fun." Maybe I need to add "Keep it cheap." 🙂

That is such a brilliant idea, the good thing about these tips is that they are all so inexpensive.xxxxx
