Hiking to a waterfall is a must when visiting Yosemite National Park. One great family friendly option is Bridalveil Fall.
If you’ve seen the iconic Tunnel View before, you’ve likely seen Bridalveil Fall. It’s the waterfall that is often the first visitors see when entering Yosemite Valley.
The 620-foot Bridalveil Fall makes a perfect hike for kids for a couple of reasons: The paved trail is a short ½ mile out and back, and the payoff is huge – a waterfall that runs all year. When the water levels aren’t too high, it’s also fun to dip a toe into the stream running alongside the trail.
The hike to Bridalveil Fall is short but steep – and definitely doable for little explorers in about 30 minutes. Pay attention to the elements: The trail may be icy in winter and misty (or downright soaking) in spring and early summer.
When you arrive at the base of the fall, you’ll likely notice people bouldering on the rocks alongside the trail – the ones directly below the fall and behind the sign recommending against it. The rocks are slippery and not a safe place for kids to be exploring.
Be advised: The trailhead to Bridalveil Fall is the first one most visitors pass on their way into the Valley. During summer, expect crowds in the early morning hours when most park visitors are arriving. Come back after lunch and you shouldn’t have trouble finding a spot in the parking lot.
Practical Matters
- The Bridalveil Fall trail is an easy ½-mile out-and-back that can be completed in about 30 minutes.
- A paved trail leads from the parking lot to the base of the waterfall. Stroller-accessible, but steep.
- Bridalveil Fall flows all year, with peak flow in May.
- Trail conditions vary depending on the season & flow. Expect lots of spray in spring & early summer & icy conditions in winter.
- Toilets are available at the trailhead.
- Parking at the trailhead is limited. If possible, visit in the afternoon when crowds die down.
To get to the trailhead: From Tunnel View, drive 1.5 miles east into Yosemite Valley on Highway 41. The trailhead for Bridalveil Fall is on the right. From Yosemite Valley, take Highway 140 to the intersection with Highway 41. Turn right and make an immediate left into the parking area.
