The page is about to turn on yet another month. The excitement of Halloween, pumpkins, costumes, candy and more is looming. Which makes this the perfect time to go apple picking.
Go for a few hours or make it a full day of outdoor fun. Relax and meander through the orchard taking in the sights and smells of fall.
A few good things to know about apple picking with kids before you go:
- You can find a list of pick-your-own farms here. (We even have a few within a couple hours’ drive of Los Angeles.)
- Dress for the weather. Bring layers so cool temperatures don’t catch you off guard. If it’s warm in your area, don’t forget sunscreen and bug spray.
- Do your homework so you know what’s ripe for the picking before you get there. Call ahead to find about costs. And remember, apples are heavy, so only pick as many as you think you can use.
- Celebrate apples by enjoying a sweet apple treat. Many apple farms offer fresh apple cider, candy apples and other unique fall treats.
- Continue the fun when you get home by putting your apples to use. Try apple polishing or taste testing apples with kids – or bake a pie.

Fall apple picking is one of my absolute favorite things. Some apple picking adventures can definitely turn into misadventures if you don’t dress for the weather. I’ve been freezing and soaked in the rain too many times!

We’ve been apple picking, too! Just in our neighbor’s yard, but still fun. Hope you don’t mind of I share my applesauce post 🙂 http://travelingmel.com/bring-on-the-fall-making/ I think we might go to another friend’s place to get even more apples!
