Whether you spend time outside every day, just on weekends or (God forbid!) only on special occasions, I’m guessing more time in the great outdoors in 2014 certainly wouldn’t hurt.
I for one am going to do it – make getting outside and into nature more a priority for both the kids and me.
When it comes to setting goals, I like to have a plan. Here’s my simple 3-step guide to getting outside and into nature more in 2014. Good luck!
Step 1: Schedule time to connect with nature.
Most families today are already overscheduled. Simply hoping you’ll find time to get outside and into nature more in 2014 isn’t good enough. If you want it to happen, you need to make time for nature. Schedule at least 15 minutes of green time (“nature time”) every day.
Step 2: Dress for the weather.
Those of us in the Northern Hemisphere are facing a stretch of cold winter weather. Getting outside and into nature every day may seem like an impossible goal. The solution? Gear up for the weather to ensure that everyone – kids and adults alike – are comfortable while outside.
Step 3: Keep it simple – and do something fun!
Exploring nature with kids doesn’t have to mean hitting the trail, heading to the mountains or going camping (though those are all fine ideas). Connecting with nature is as easy as heading out the back door. Do some bird watching, go for a neighborhood nature walk or hunt for backyard bugs. (I’ve got plenty more ideas for backyard nature fun if you need ’em!)

Thanks for stopping by, Ann!

Living in the urban Los Angeles jungle has taught me to "see" nature in the less obvious spots – the cracks in the pavement or the telephone wires. I love that once you start looking, you realize how much amazing nature is happening all around you.

You are a role model to the rest of us, Mel! 🙂

Hi Abbey! Can't believe the girls are big enough now to go training-wheel free! So exciting. Cheers to a wonderful 2014!

I love that your ideas are obtainable to all – you're right, we can experience nature just by stepping out the door. I'd love for my family to dive into the great outdoors and we will as we can. A change in how we view the ordinary: the backyard, the neighborhood, the park, etc. can definitely offer a true encounter with nature – and every day.

I think we do a pretty good job getting outside, but it's my goal this year to do it even more! We are making one day every weekend "family outdoor day." Even when the weather is cruddy. Plus, I'll get them outside during the week.

Thanks for the tips! I am making a resolution to get my girls outside more and especially to ride their bikes. 2014 is going to be the year of no more training wheels!

I'm thrilled that you're heading back to Cali, Dawn! We're only brave enough to camp during the summer, so I look forward to reading of your adventures. 🙂

These are great tips!
We are outside just about everyday but once we are back in Cali our goal is to camp at least once a month, even if it is just Saturday night at the beach.
