Winter seems longer than the other seasons, doesn’t it? I’m thinking that in spite of all the stellar ideas I shared in 50 ways to connect with nature this winter, you might be feeling a little uninspired about heading outside right about now.
Which is why I’m sharing a resource that might come in handy. The Kids Winter Handbook is billed as “the official book of wintertime,” featuring outdoor fun, snow sports, winter crafts, indoor games, fireside stories, recipes and more.
You interested?
What’s inside: The 128-page handbook is divided into four sections: welcoming winter, outdoor winter fun, indoor winter fun and winter celebrations. In each section, you’ll find a mix of science projects, crafts, games and recipes. A few examples:
- Snow science
- Warm-me-up soup
- Winter picnic
- Feeding squirrels
- Make your own winter trail
- DIY Winter Olympic games
What you’ll like:
- The price! A used copy sells on Amazon for less than $10.
- It’s kid friendly, with an easy-to-read format that relies on bullet points, simple instructions and lots of fun illustrations.
- There are lots of creative ideas mixed in with old favorites, giving you the best of both worlds.
What you might wish was different:
- Some activities are pretty involved and can’t be adequately explained in short bullet points – like making syrup out of sap, creating your own snow shoes or building an ice rink.
- No color photos, which is a pet peeve of mine. The illustrations almost make up for it, though.
- If you don’t have snow, this book won’t be much help.
And since we don’t have snow here in Los Angeles, I’d like to pass my copy of The Kids Winter Handbook on to one of you who does.

If you’d like a chance to win my copy of The Kids Winter Handbook, leave a comment below. It’s that simple! Good luck!

That book always comes up as a suggestion from Amazon (scary how well they know me) and I am always intrigued. Since we do have snow, and I have lots of time to try stuff out with my kids, I might get it (if I don't win it here 🙂 Thanks for the honest review!
