Welcome to Day 2 of 31 Days of Backyard Nature Fun! That’s right – a month-long series offering you simple, fun ways to get outside exploring nature right in your own backyard.
Were you able to watch the sunset yesterday? If you missed it, no worries! There’s a new one heading your way every day this year!
Day 2: Start a family adventure journal.
Consider this our twist on the classic nature journal. Traditionally, such journals feature nature observations and wildlife sightings, perhaps even with a sprinkling of sketches.
Our family adventure journal is more like a scrapbook of our outings in nature. It’s where we record not just what we did or saw, but how it made us feel.
Start yours today and by the end of the year, you’ll have a scrapbook of outdoor adventures to look back on and inspire you in the years ahead. All you need to create your own family adventure journal is a spiral bound notebook and a pen.
Then decide what types of information you’ll want to record. In our 2012 journal, we focused on just a few pieces of information:
- Location visited
- Date visited
- Who went
- Weather
- Highlights
- New discoveries
- Photo, sketch or other memento
Remember! There’s no right or wrong way to keep a nature journal, so do whatever feels right for your family.
