Backyard Nature Fun – Day 5: Make a pinecone birdfeeder

by Debi Huang

I’m excited that so many of you are enjoying the ideas I’ve been sharing here during our 31 Days of Backyard Nature Fun. I’m hopeful that you’ll feel inspired to head outside and into nature this weekend with your kiddos.

Start simple: Make a goal to spend at least 15 minutes exploring the natural world right outside your back door. Do you know what critters call your backyard home?

Day 5: Make a pinecone birdfeeder.
Even in our very urban setting, there is plenty of wildlife to observe right in our own backyard. The most vocal (and usually easiest to see) of these are the birds. And in most parts of the country, they need a little extra help finding food this time of year.

One way you can help is by providing a backyard birdfeeder.

You only need a few items to get started: bird seed (whatever is popular with your local birds), peanut butter, string or twine, and a pinecone. (If you can’t find a pinecone, use a bagel or a toilet paper roll instead.)

Start by covering the pinecone with peanut butter; then add the birdseed. String the pinecone up in a nearby tree and wait to see who comes to visit. (Keep in mind that if you’ve never provided food for backyard birds, it might take them a few days to take notice.)

If your feeder becomes a hit, you might also want to try making birdseed ornaments or even stringing fresh garland.

Just joining us? Catch up on what we’re up to at 31 Days of Backyard Nature Fun.

It's always nice to share.
